Letter from the Director

Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome you and your child to the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program.   The year 2024 marks our 41st year of operation and my 6th year as Director of the Program.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 programs were cancelled.  We greatly missed our loyal campers, who return year after year, and especially our pack of seniors, who expected to spend their 8th summer with us.

Our returning and new campers this year are a group of bright, motivated young people.  In this program we meet gifted children's need for academic curiosity and autonomy, increased rigor, advanced content, and faster paced instruction.   Recognizing that even among the gifted there are a wide range of experiences and abilities, our faculty differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of the gifted & talented students on their rosters.

We did, unfortunately, need to increase tuition this year.  Inflation has hit all aspects of our operation and the College has also changed how it bills for the lodging.  I have donated my time the last 2 years because I knew it would take a few seasons to reach our pre-covid numbers, but even my donation is not enough to keep pace with inflation.  Our faculty have not had a pay increase for the last 20 years, but we love what we do and the many joys of working with gifted children are what we're really in this for anyway.

It is our hope that your child will find his/her participation in the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program full of rich experiences that will inspire their love of learning—both inside and outside the classroom, and throughout life.   If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via email (sgp@wvwc.edu) or phone (304-473-8330).  It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome those of you who are new and those of you who are returning to our program.
