Our Awesome Campers

Abby Sanders

Abby Sanders is from Tunnelton, WV. She writes of our program: "Five years ago, I began something that I’d never imagine would affect me the way it has. The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program was something that I had dreamt about for years before I first attended; two entire weeks with people who were like me and enjoyed learning as much as I. I was scared at first, because the idea of being with people older and smarter than me made me nervous, but I soon found the value of being exposed to different minds. The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program not only exposed me to different minds and unique people, but I was also introduced to different religions, ethnicities, and even different nationalities.

The classes and experiences at the Wesleyan program have become some of my favorite memories, and those two weeks in June are the most anticipated part of my year. Family Christmases don’t include astrophysics and creative writing lessons, unfortunately, but the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program does. Additionally, the things that I have learned at the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program have continued to benefit me for years after we studied them. Namely everything I’ve learned in both the mathematics class and in the astrophysics class, which has given me a leg up in every math class I’ve taken since.

But my favorite part of the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program has and will always be the creative writing class. I’ve loved both writing and literature since I was old enough to comprehend it, and it being taught by a teacher who has such passion for it is transformative. Every summer after I return home from the program, I feel like all of my creativity has been amplified, both with the things I’ve learned and the experiences I’ve had. But perhaps the most important thing I have learned at the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program, above the environmental sciences, the history, even the astrophysics, is that great minds don’t think alike at all. Great minds think differently."

Alia King

She is a Cadette Girl Scout having earned her Bronze Award and planning for her Silver Award. She loves playing piano, reading and watching insightful TV programs.

Chloe Treible

Chloe Treible is from Germantown, TN. Her favorite subject is Language Arts, but she also enjoys Math. Outside of school, she participates in drama and dance and she plays basketball on the school team. An interesting fact is that both of her grandparents went to WV Wesleyan and her Dad lived in Buckhannon when he was really young.

Sophia Shumway

Sophia Shumway loves to read anything she can get her hands on, she loves to sketch, she has the desire to be an author or animator/ graphic designer, she loves to play volleyball and basketball (even though she is not the best) and she has been told that she is VERY talkative. But on top of all of that, she loves to learn. She believes that you should learn at least one new thing every day.

Sophie writes of the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program: "I have to say that I have never had as much fun as I did there. All my life, no matter where I lived, I have always been a little different than other kids. I never really had the chance to make friends with kids with the same intellectual level as me, and that is even after I lived in Germany, New Mexico, and North Carolina.

I learned about the Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program through my gifted teacher, and I’m glad I did. Not only did I learn so much and have a blast, but I also made a lot of life-long friends. The classes are always interesting and an actual challenge and the camp makes the two weeks fun. In those short two weeks, your mind will be challenged, you’ll make amazing friends, and have a blast while learning and having fun.

I think a part of me has been shaped by this program. If I never went to this camp, I would never have had many of the great experiences I experienced. At camp, I learned about the United Nations, how to program a computer, learned a great deal about physics, met my best friend, won Capture the Flag with people who are experts at strategy, and played Glow-in-the-Dark Dodge Ball.

The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program is the best camp I have ever been to!"
